We are all climbing different paths through the mountain of life, and we have all experienced much hardship and strife. There are many paths through the mountain of life, and some climbs can be felt like the point of a knife. Some paths are short and others are long, who can say which path is right or wrong? The beauty of truth is that each path has its own song, and if you listen closely you will find where you belong. So climb your own path true and strong, but respect all other truths for your way for them could be wrong. -Dan Inosanto

DearSir,
I'm currently writing a book I may have told you about over lunch. It's the story of Louie Zamperini, now 85, a one-time juvenile delinquent who became a world class runner in high school, went to the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, and became the NCAA mile champion at USC in 1938 and 1939. When the 1940 Tokyo Olympics were canceled, he joined the Army Air Corp in the Pacific. His bomber went down on a rescue mission in 1943. Miraculously he survived and spent 47 days drifting 2000 miles across the ocean until he was captured by the Japanese, and imprisoned and tortured for two years. Again, he survived and came home a hero, only to lapese into alcoholism and anger. Four years later he found faith, returned to Japan and forgave his captors, then spent the rest of his life telling his story nationwide and working with wayward kids.
I'm now writing the chapter where he wins his first NCAA mile. I thought you'd be interested in these paragraphs.
--- "I never really set my heart on breaking any world record save for one: the National Collegiate mile. Bill Bonthron of Princeton had beat my hero, Glenn Cunningham, by inches, and broke the record in 4:08:08. I thought that someday I’d get the title back for Glenn and for me. I trained for it, too, but not in a way Coach Cromwell at USC would have approved of. In those days, you weren’t allowed to run uphill. This included running up stairways, like in the stands at the Coliseum which was the only “mountain” I could find around USC. The doctors insisted it would damage the heart; in reality it did the heart good. And the legs. I would climb the fence in the evenings and do the “agony run.” When I got to the top my legs burned with fire. Then I’d walk across a row, go down again, and up another stairway. I did that for a week after each normal workout.
Here’s why. People say you have to have a positive attitude to win. It’s nice to have, though I often had a defeatist attitude before a race. But having a positive attitude has nothing to do with winning; it’s what you do to your body. Self-esteem doesn’t help you if you’re not in shape.
David Rensin
A man was walking on a great journey when he came to a massive wall. He tried to get over it, but couldn't. He tried to go around, but it was too great. He tried to go under, but the ground was too hard. Finally, another traveller came up to the wall. The first turned and said, "It is impossible. I have tried everything to pass this wall and I have failed." The second traveller looked at the wall and walked up to it. He opened a door in it and walked through. "Perhaps you should try the door."
The most obvious answer is usually the right one.

"When we seek to discover the best in others, we somehow bring out the best in ourselves." ~ William Arthur Ward
If there is a righteousness in the heart, there will be beauty in the character.
If there be beauty in the character, there will be harmony in the home.
If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation.
When there is order in the nation, there will be peace on earth.
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.
The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything, they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.
May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy.

"To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly; to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart; to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never. In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony."

The work you do at the Black Belt Training is not about what you know, being right about what you know, acquiring more knowledge, providing answers, or acquiring on-the-job skills; it's not about filling in the blanks of what you know you don't know. This work is about uncovering new possibilities-expanding the opportunities available to you by allowing you to think and act in innovative ways. This work is about what you don't know you don't know.

"In this age, which believes that there is a short cut to everything, the greatest lesson to be learned is that the most difficult way is, in the long run, the easiest." -- Henry Miller, American author 1891-1980. The recent fall of the dot.com economy and its get-rich-quick mindset has given way to a more traditional way of doing business, where the "old ways" of gaining profits and servicing customers have returned. In the same way, there's a backlash against the get-a-blackbelt-quick mindset in the martial arts. The true value of the martial arts can't be discovered in a weekend seminar, or in a few months at a McDojo. You gain the real benefits only through hard training and dedication. Train hard!

Eleven Rules from Bill Gates' new book, "Business @ The Speed of Thought":

1) Life is not fair; get used to it.
2) The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
3) You will NOT make 40 thousand dollars a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice president with a car phone, until you earn both.
4) If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure.
5) Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping; they called it opportunity.
6) If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
7) Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents' generation, try "delousing" the closet in your own room.
8) Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades; they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
9) Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.
10)Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
11)Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.
"Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood and probably they will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing insistency. Remember that our sons and daughters are going to do things that would stagger us."
Daniel Burnham, 1910
I hate to approach anything from a negative point of view. But sometimes it's necessary to speak bluntly. To discuss the negative in order to understand the positive.
The simple fact is...there are things that parents sometimes do that lower their child's self-esteem.
The following are self-esteem killers. If a parent intended (heaven forbid!) to lower a child's self-esteem they would:
1. Compare one child with another, especially with siblings
2. Have super high standards; reward only high levels of progress
3. Yell -- a lot!
4. Assume their child really wants, needs, and deserves all of the freedom they are asking for Additionally, they would:
5. Let the child make lots of choices for themselves, especially when they are really young
6. Neglect to follow through; for example, Mom tells her daughter that a certain rule violation will result in certain consequences. Daughter commits the violation. Mom caves in, and doesn't enforce the consequences.
7. Set standards for the kids that Mom & Dad don't hold themselves to
8. When you catch children aspiring, caution them not to set their sights too high
9. Be frugal in spending time with your children
And, finally,
10. Assume they will follow your words, rather than your example
Of course, our job is to turn each of these awful statements into it's opposite. Building your child's self-esteem requires consistent effort. Be diligent, and enjoy the satisfaction of raising a Happy, Healthy, Confident child!

The Picture of Peace There once was a King who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The King looked at all the pictures, but there were only two he really liked and he had to choose between them. One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains were all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace. The other picture had mountains too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky from which rain fell, in which lightening played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all. But when the King looked, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest... perfect peace. Which picture do you think won the prize? The King chose the second picture. Do you know why? "Because," explained the King, "peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace. Author Unknown

The Adventurer's Creed My life is an adventure, and I relish every exciting moment of it...My life is a temporary gift; I will use it to the fullest and relinquish it with great sorrow...I am a unique, irreplaceable, priceless work of God, and since I am like no other, I will not be bound by the chains of conformity. Just as I cherish the right to live my life as an adventure, I will admire the right of others to do unconventional, adventurous things...My body needs sleep, but I enjoy each day so much that I surrender myself to it reluctantly and awake each morning refreshed and eager for new adventures...Because I recognize life is a temporary gift, I treasure time and organize it and manage it to the best of my ability...Because an adventure is that joyful experience that happens on the way to a destination, I will always have a purposeful direction for my life. But I will always attach more importance to the journey than to the end.

There is this tough black belt in kung fu, and karate. He beats everybody in every tournament, and is comfortable with all the rules and is scared of nobody. There is this tough non martial arts guy born near a lot of street fights and get into fights a lot. The black belt finds himself on that street and gets into a fight with the tough non martial arts guy. Who wins? The tough non martial arts guy because the black belt was too busy getting scared of a real situation without rules, referees, and trying to tap out submitting the non trained guy. Just as it is the clear mirror that reflects without distortion, or the quiet valley that echoes a sound, so must one who would study Karate-do purge himself of selfish and evil thoughts, for only with a clear mind and conscience can he understand that which he receives. Master Gichin Funakoshi
There is no place in contemporary Karate-do for different schools. Some instructors, I know, claim to have invented new and unusual kata, ands they arrogate to themselves the right to be called founders of "schools". Indeed, I have heard myself and my colleagues referred to as the Shoto-kan school, but I strongly object to this attempt at classification. My belief is that all these "schools" should be amalgamated into one so that Karate-do may pursue and orderly and useful progress into man's future. Gichin Funakoshi.
Some young enthusiasts of karate believe that it can be learned only from instructors in a dojo, but such men are mere technicians, not true karateka. There is a Buddhist saying that "any place can be a dojo," and that is saying that anyone who wants to follow the way of karate must never forget. Karate-do is not only the acquisition of certain defensive skills but also the mastering of the arts of being a good and honest member of society. Master Gichin Funakoshi

To polish means to face yourself straight, to recognize your weaknesses, to eliminate them, and courageously step forward. This action, experience, and practice is the only way we can improve and free ourselves of our mental blocks, so that someday we will really be able to express our strongest, most beautiful energy on the Earth. Then we can happily leave the Earth. I hope everybody feels this way. Tsutomu Ohshima
Master Funakoshi felt that, rather than a great variety of kata, it is more important to take a limited number and practice them thoroughly and precisely. This way of thinking can be regarded as basic to the Shotokai. Motonobu Hironishi
The main thing is to keep pushing oneself, to keep striving to awaken, by whatever means one has chosen. The difference between the waking person and the person who is asleep is that the sleepwalker feels he already is awake; the awakened one is still striving , pushing, struggling to be awakened. Tom Muzila.
Most people stop themselves long before they get close to doing their best. They think 'Oh, I couldn't do that,' or 'Me? Run 30 miles? Oh, I could never do that. But they don't have any idea of their real limits, because they've never pushed themselves. Most people have never tested themselves to see how long they can go without food or sleep. So they set artificial limits. They're afraid of things that really wouldn't defeat them. They're ruled by fear, and their entire lives are inhibited that way. Tom Muzila.
In a basic or beginner's training session - just as in a marathon session - the most important objective is to get control of their concentration. Most people go through practice and training just stepping through their moves and all of this junk is going through their minds as they block, reverse punch and so forth. They're not in control of their mind - they're letting all of the external stimuli be in control. How you focus on and execute the most basic drills in the dojo is very important. Just as in long-distance sessions, you must focus and concentrate, and then really work hard on keeping that concentration. It sounds simple but it's actually very tough. Tom Muzila
A young boy asked his employer, a tired beaten man why he had to carry so many bags of rice. "Because you have to work." replied the old man while marking down the prices of his canned goods. "Why do we have to work?" "Because," replied the old man, "we have to support ourselves and our loved ones." said the old man as he patted his grandchildren on the head. "But why don't we just steal, we're gonna die anyway, so we just steal enough to live through this horrible life." The old man put down his pen and closed his eyes and told the boy with all the patience in the world,"Yes,it's true that everyone has to die. The noblest of all man and the scrum of earth...the difference is how you die...you can put it this way...we spend a hundred years working in life so we can past the last second on earth without any regrets."
Education is not the piling on of learning, information, data, facts, skills, or abilities--that's training or instruction--but is rather a making visible what is hidden as a seed... To be educated, a person doesn't have to know much or be informed, but he or she does have to have been exposed vulnerably to the transformative events of an engaged human life... One of the greatest problems of our time is that many are schooled but few are educated. ---Thomas Moore

On January 3rd, 2001 in my Little Zen Calendar a Japanese Proverb was quoted. I looked at it and immediately thought of you, so I pass it on. "Beginning is easy--continuing is hard."
There's harmony and inner peace to be found in following a moral compass that points in the same direction, regardless of fashion or trend.
We should all do what, in the long run, gives us joy, even if it is only picking grapes or sorting laundry.
We learn as much from sorrow as from joy, as much from illness as from health, from handicap as from advantage and indeed perhaps more.
Never regard study as a duty, but as the enviable opportunity to learn to know the liberating influence of beauty in the realm of the spirit for your own personal joy and to the profit of the community to which your later work belongs.
This is the true joy in life --being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.
There are souls in this world which have the gift of finding joy everywhere and of leaving it behind them when they go.
Two battleships assigned to the training squadron had been at sea on maneuvers in heavy weather for several days. I was serving on the lead battleship and was on watch on the bridge as night fell. The visibility was poor with patchy fog, so the captain remained on the bridge keeping an eye on all activities. Shortly after dark, the lookout on the wing of the bridge reported, "Light, bearing on the starboard bow." "Is it steady or moving astern?" the captain called out. Lookout replied, "Steady, captain," which meant we were on a dangerous collision course with that ship. The captain then called to the signalman, "Signal that ship: We are on a collision course, advise you change course 20 degrees." Back came a signal, "Advisable for you to change course 20 degrees." The captain said, "Send, I'm a captain, change course 20 degrees." "I'm a seaman second class," came the reply. "You had better change course 20 degrees." By that time, the captain was furious. He spat out, "Send, I'm a battleship. Change course 20 degrees." Back came the flashing light, "I'm a lighthouse." We changed course.
The value of practice The following story demonstrates the sometimes-negative power of knowledge without practice: "Johnny did not see the need to practice hard; he was very bright and always understood quickly. He read the classics so that he could sound as eloquent as his teacher. Wanting to be knowing in all things, Johnny read a history book or two and was able to converse brilliantly about history. Johnny read an economics book or two and was able to speak knowingly about economics. Johnny read a few books about swimming...... and Johnny drowned."
The American "Dream" The American businessman was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them. The Mexican replied only a little while. The American then asked why didn't he stay out longer and catch more fish? The Mexican said he had enough to support his family's immediate needs. The American then asked, but what do you do with the rest of your time? The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life, senor." The American scoffed, "I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing, and with the proceeds buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats; eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually NYC, where you will run your expanding enterprise." The Mexican fisherman asked, "But senor, how long will this all take?" To which the American replied, "15-20 years." But what then, senor? The American laughed and said that's the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. You would make millions. Millions, senor? Then what? The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos."
The Picture of Peace There once was a King who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains were all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest... perfect peace. Which picture do you think won the prize? The King chose the second picture. Do you know why? Lesson Number One A crow was sitting on a tree, doing nothing all day. A small rabbit saw the crow, and asked him, "Can I also sit like you and do nothing all day long?" The crow answered: "Sure, why not." So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the crow, and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it. Moral of the story is: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.
Lesson Number Two A turkey was chatting with a bull. "I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree," sighed the turkey, "but I haven't got the energy." "Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?" replied the bull. "They're packed with nutrients." The turkey pecked at a lump of dung and found that it actually gave him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fortnight, there he was proudly perched at the top of the tree. Soon he was promptly spotted a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the tree. Moral of the story: Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there.
Lesson Number Three A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold, the bird froze and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on it. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, it began to realize how warm it was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him! The morals of this story are: 1) Not everyone who drops shit on you is your enemy. 2) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend. 3) And when you're in deep shit, keep your mouth shut

"The Art of Peace is medicine for a sick world. There is evil and disorder in the world, because people have forgotten that all things emanate from one source. Return to that source and leave behind all self-centered thoughts, petty desires, and anger. Those who are possessed by nothing possess everything." -- Morihei Ueshiba (O Sensei).
Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of aikido, thought of his art not only as physical education or combat training, but as a way of life that would spread peace throughout the world. Today, Ueshiba's aikido has been embraced by generations of practitioners, and has also introduced millions of newcomers to the martial arts. And, as we all know, the practice of the martial arts develops the mind and character as well as the body. A populace of sound mind and character is certainly conducive to world peace. That Ueshiba was on to something, wasn't he?

"With Aikido, you have to unlearn first. That is why it is so hard. You are learning something tat is very, very sophisticated. It is something that warriors after hundreds and hundreds of years of dedicated endeavors, of life and death situations, have finally figured out that there is a point of least resistance, and that there is something that works beyond strength...physical strength. It is "Ki", it`s attitude and it`s adept movements that seem to go beyond force, and that a lot of times using strength is completely secondary to learning a way. A kind of moving without resistance, a non-resistant movement, a relaxed movement. So you have to unlearn first in order to learn. It does take longer."
"If you don't demand a real situation, a real atmosphere in your dojo, where people are able to go hard, and they do go hard, then your practice becomes, in my opinion ineffective."
"Some people will learn certain things in six months, and other people will take six years. There's no way that this can be any other level other than an individual level. It is very personal."
"When you are able to practice it in a high enough level, you can`t get into something that is more. No holds barred. In other words, you don't have to restrain yourself from going into the things that are more dangerous. It's real in the sense that no matter how much a beginner you are on the mats, if you do the wrong thing, you're going to get hurt."
"The benefits that one should reap in the martial arts have nothing to do with the color of a belt, they have to do with developing spiritual awareness, developing mental and emotional calm and strength and developing physical health and things like that."
"Aikido is based on Love, yes it is based on Harmony, yes it is based on Oneness, and it is based on not having an enemy. Even if somebody comes to try to cut my throat right now in my opinion, they're not necessarily my enemy, because I have what we call mushin. When somebody attacks me I don`t think about, I`m going to get him, I`m going to do this. It`s just a state of mind, a haert without emotion, a mind without emotion that I have, and the only thing I`d do is react to terminationg the situation to the bet of my ability."
"O`Sensei said that the basics should never change. O`Sensei always talked about shinken shobu, or fighting to the death, or at least with that feling. So that if somebody lives, fine, and if somebody dies, that`s too bad, either way. It`s that seriousness of life or death that s lacking with many people and they end up making it a play. Aikido is not a play. I used to hear stories of O`Sensei. People were trying to kill him constantly. Many times he was faced with death. Many times people tried to kill him. They didn`t try to punch him. they didn`t try to throw dirt in his face, they tried to kill him. You know there`s a difference. And thats why O`Sensei`s Aikido worked."

I like business because it is competitive, because it rewards deeds rather than words. It’s New Years Day and Dad and the boys are watching the game while Grandma knits on the porch and Mom is showing the daughter the secrets of the kitchen. The daughter notices that Mom cuts the ends off the ham before putting it in the oven and asks “Why do you cut the ends off the ham?” Mom replies that was the way she has always prepared ham and that was the way her Mom taught her. If she wants to know why, go ask Grandma. So she does. Grandma replies that she really doesn’t know. That was how she was taught by her Mom. So they all gather around the phone and placed a call to the old country to wish Great Grandma a happy New Year and ask her why do they cut the ends of the ham? Great Grandma answers that the reason she cut the ends off was that her oven was too small and that was the only way the ham would fit................ As professional educators and teachers, too many of us continue to cut the ends off the ham simply because that was the way we were taught.
Johnny did not see the need to practice hard; he was very bright and always understood quickly. He read the Classics so that he could sound as eloquent as his teacher. Wanting to be knowing in all things, Johnny read a history book or two and was able to converse brilliantly about history. Johnny read an economics book or two and was able to speak knowingly about economics. Johnny read a few books about swimming...... and Johnny drowned.

A distraction is only a distraction if you pay attention to it.
It was a warm Monday morning in Austin, Texas. Mother Theresa was sitting by the window writing in her journal. One of her co-workers rushed in the room. “Guess what? The people of Austin have put together a rally against violence in your honor. They are expecting you downstairs.” She said. Mother Theresa looked out the window and noticed the crowd. “Tell those people that I will not join them. However when they have a rally for peace, they can count on me.”
The term “martial Arts” is thrown around a lot without any idea of its meaning. “Martial” means “war” or “conflict”. In a martial arts dojo we train for conflict there is no “martial” in martial art. Fear, to be overcome, must be confronted and experienced. Fear, to be overcome, must be confronted and experienced. Fear must become part of your life experience. Appreciation of fear and the appropriate reaction when confronting fear is the sign of a mature martial artist. Are not your dojo mates and teacher the ones that you should ultimately trust when learning to confront your fears? In real dojo, they are.
Remember that most people who call themselves martial artists are nothing of the sort. Most dojo are not martial arts dojos either. They are glorified social clubs thriving in an environment of emotional stimulation which is heightened by a false or extremely limited perception of danger. When real danger shows itself in such a dojo, the participants run for cover. In a real dojo the participants run towards the conflict.
